Florida Looks Forward to Supporting Future U.S. Space Command Missions

Huntsville Selected for U.S. Space Command HQ, Florida Pledges Continued Aerospace Industry Growth

Exploration Park, Fla. (January 13, 2021) – Today, Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett announced Huntsville, Ala., as the preferred location to host U.S. Space Command Headquarters (USSPACECOM HQ). Florida’s Space Coast was one of six finalists after the initial list was down selected from 26 communities, including eight in Florida.
“As the Chair of Space Florida, I’m disappointed Brevard County was overlooked for the location of U.S. Space Command Headquarters.  I will, however, keep working arduously for the continued growth and advancement of the commercial aerospace industry, as well as the defense and military capability services our state and nation could benefit from,” said Florida Lt. Governor Jeanette Nuñez.

“We applaud the work of the U.S. Air Force in this process as well as that of our state and local partners,” said Frank DiBello, President and CEO of Space Florida. “The efforts have demonstrated and revealed Florida’s true capabilities and commitment to the aerospace industry and national defense. Space Florida’s unique toolkit, granted by the Governor and Florida’s Legislature, has paved the way in transforming the Cape Canaveral Spaceport to the premier gateway to space – one that will support the next era of national security missions.”

“By making it to the finals of this process, Florida’s Space Coast has distinguished itself nationally as one of the most military-friendly communities and capable of hosting a major combatant command. I am confident this community is well-positioned for other strategic basing opportunities in the near future and we will continue to work closely with the Air Force, Department of Defense, and our state and local partners to succeed,” said Lynda Weatherman, president and CEO of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast.

today’s announcement, Space Florida congratulates the collective efforts of all interested communities, the Florida Defense Support Task Force, Florida Defense Alliance, and our state and federal elected officials. This teamwork will continue to pay dividends as we pursue other opportunities to house future military space programs, missions and units to meet the threats of the future. Brevard County’s Patrick Space Force Base was one of six locations to participate in the down-select phase of the process.

In August of 2019, U.S. Space Command was established as the military’s 11th unified combatant command.
