Development at the LLF ensures Florida’s leadership in the space economy and exploration will continue, bringing new capabilities and customers to the busiest spaceport in the world. Space Florida's LLF boasts one of the longest runways in the world at 15,000 feet. Under a 30-year agreement with NASA, Space Florida manages this facility, which is open to commercial customers.
Completion of a new mile-long utility corridor has already enabled ground leasing opportunities. As a part of the Florida Spaceport Improvement Program, investing approximately $63.8 million in grant funds over the past four years in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation, Space Florida’s LLF improvements allow for expanded commercial use while bolstering military and government operations, enabling future projects, fostering industrial growth, and attracting private capital investment.
Additional LLF improvements made by Space Florida include preparation and preservation of land, construction on Hangar Road for improved emergency response access, and completion of the wetland mitigation project. These improvements continued to increase the value of the LLF and its ability to attract innovative companies to Florida.
Once primarily used for government operations, the LLF has evolved into a vibrant hub for aerospace innovation, research, manufacturing, and testing. Recent infrastructure enhancements include land development for future tenants, runway access improvements, and significant power upgrades to nearby Launch Complex 46 to support both commercial and Department of Defense initiatives. In 2023 alone, the LLF facilitated over 400 landings and departures, supporting significant missions such as NASA’s Crew 5, 6, and 7, SpaceX’s CRS-25 and CRS-27 to the ISS, and the Axiom 2 crewed mission.
The LLF’s secure location offers year-round access to restricted airspace, making it ideal for a range of activities including horizontal flights, suborbital flight training, weightless flights, and aviation and aerodynamic testing. The facility is equipped with an air traffic control tower and all necessary services for horizontal launch and landing, accommodating all types and sizes of aircraft and spacecraft.
The LLF offers prime aerospace/aviation-designated land with existing facilities ripe for development. Prospective projects include multiple hangars, passenger processing, operations facilities, assembly and manufacturing facilities, and propellant and fueling facilities. The site also boasts railway access, supporting both government and commercial spaceflight, including orbital and suborbital, crewed and uncrewed missions.
In compliance with NEPA, Space Florida has prepared an Environmental Assessment for the expansion of the LLF, evaluating potential impacts and planning sustainable development. This document is crucial for future FAA license modifications and ongoing environmental stewardship at the facility.
