Blue Origin, a commercial spaceflight company and aerospace manufacturer, is dedicated to expanding humanity’s ability to live and work in space. Since 2012, their suborbital New Shepard rocket program has seen multiple successful crewed missions and has been instrumental in advancing reusable rocket engines and launch vehicles.
When they needed new launch and manufacturing facilities to support their next generation heavy-lift New Glenn orbital launch vehicle, they narrowed down their location search to a handful of highly motivated states that hoped to attract their business. Lower long-term operating costs and established infrastructure are what they were looking for, but most of the proposals were anchored in up-front cash offers and not a long-term partnership that supports sustainable growth.
Space Florida helped enable Blue Origin to efficiently establish launch facilities at Cape Canaveral plus a conveniently co-located manufacturing campus in our state-of-the-art Exploration Park. Because space is designated as a mode of transportation in Florida, companies like Blue Origin benefit from state investment in space transportation infrastructure, leveraging up their substantial investment of private capital in the state.
Now, they’ve seen continued growth in Florida and Blue Origin has created thousands of new jobs and deployed hundreds of millions of dollars in private investment. Instead of just getting a one-time cash injection and some splashy press from another state, they gained a long-term partner who’s truly aligned with their business.
